This paper describes the main power versus resolution trade-offs existing in the design of pipeline analog-to-digital converters (ADCs). It also discusses how digital gain calibration, one of the key techniques employed, eases those trade-offs, thus achieving significant improvements in power and area. The benefits of digital calibration are clearly demonstrated by the measurement results of a 10-bit ADC, which show extraordinary linearity improvements when it is enabled.
